The Civil War battle which made Gettysburg a name known around the country remains the dominant feature of the town. Universities and a strong city businesses center keep Gettysburg modern, but historical tourism is still the town's bread and butter. Visit the old battlefield on your own or on a guided tour. Definitely check out the American Civil War Museum and get a hotel close to all the action.

Top Restaurants in GettysburgFor a whole new way of experiencing Civil War history, visit Gettysburg during the three day Gettysburg Civil War Battle Reenactment. Taking place during the first week of July, about when the Battle of Gettysburg was fought in 1863, the reenactment features five battles, live demonstrations and a huge living history village. Due to high levels of pedestrian traffic, the event takes place at the reenactment site that is just southwest of Gettysburg National Military Park.
